Ecg247

ECG247 is a medically certified wireless heart sensor developed and sold by Appsens AS of Lillesand, Norway, for continuous long-term monitoring of heart rhythm to identify arrhythmias. The system consists of a reusable sensor, a disposable electrode patch, a mobile app for iOS and Android, and a secure cloud storage service with web access through the ECG247 portal. The sensor has two ECG channels and supports continuous recording as well as arrhythmia- and symptom-triggered ECG storage, monitoring heart rhythm 24 hours a day for up to seven days. Detected arrhythmias are automatically categorized and classified, and the app can give the user immediate feedback if a rhythm disorder is identified; recordings are uploaded to cloud storage where they are accessible to healthcare professionals and can be shared with a general practitioner or cardiologist.

The device is positioned for use in cases of increased risk of atrial fibrillation or stroke, palpitations, fast or slow heart rate and irregular pulse, and is intended for both consumer self-testing and professional use in the health service. The sensor is water resistant and reusable. The app is available in 14 languages including English, German, Norwegian Bokmål, Arabic, Italian, Polish and Swedish, and requires iOS 13.0 or later on iPhone; the Android version requires Android 9.0 or newer with at least 4 GB RAM and does not work on newer Huawei phones lacking Google Play.

Founding story

The ECG247 sensor originated from research and technology development at the Center of e-health at the University of Agder in Grimstad, Norway, where Professor Rune Fensli worked for years on an alternative to traditional heart rhythm assessment equipment developed in the 1960s, which is cumbersome, requires hospital attendance and only covers a few consecutive days. A prototype of the wireless smart heart sensor was developed in collaboration with the Grimstad technology companies Jetro and Egde, with requirements for ease of use, high diagnostic accuracy, long continuous monitoring during normal activity such as exercise and work, robustness, reusability and low cost. Cardiologist and PhD Jarle Jortveit worked with Fensli on the project. Appsens AS was founded in 2017 by CEO Tord Ytterdahl.

Business model

Appsens AS designs and sells the ECG247 hardware sensor with disposable electrode patches, supported by a mobile app and a cloud portal for healthcare professionals. Manufacturing is outsourced to Norwegian contract producers (Kitron, Verktøymakeren) and software development to Apphuset. Products can be ordered directly through the company website, and the system is supplied both to consumers for self-testing and to clinicians and researchers.

Revenue comes from sales of the ECG247 sensor system, including reusable sensors and disposable electrode patches, ordered via the company's website; the app itself is a free download in the App Store and Google Play and requires an ECG247 sensor to function.

Traction

The company states that more than 60,000 participants have taken part in clinical trials with ECG247. The Android app has surpassed 10,000 downloads on Google Play. The device is in routine clinical use at many GPs and hospitals in Norway and other European and Asian countries, and the app is maintained with frequent releases and localization into 14 languages.
