Earthly

Earthly (Earthly Technologies) is a developer infrastructure company founded in 2020 and based in San Francisco. Its original product was Earthly, an open-source CI/CD and build framework that runs every pipeline step inside containers to produce repeatable builds that can be run locally or on top of existing CI systems such as Jenkins, CircleCI, GitHub Actions, AWS CodeBuild, Google Cloud Build and GitLab CI/CD. Builds are defined in Earthfiles, a syntax the company describes as combining Dockerfile and Makefile concepts, and Earthly acts as a layer between language-specific tooling (maven, gradle, npm, pip, go build) and the CI build spec, adding parallel execution via a directed acyclic build graph and layer/shared caching. Around the open-source tool the company sold Earthly Cloud, a cloud build automation platform, including Earthly CI and remote build runners called Earthly Satellites, offering shared cache, remote runners, shared logs and shared secrets alongside a free tier. Earthly's documentation and GitHub README now state that Earthly is no longer actively maintained.

The company's current focus is Lunar, positioned as "production monitoring for the SDLC." Lunar converts written engineering standards — wikis, AGENTS.md files, AI prompts, infrastructure rules, checklists, postmortem findings and compliance mandates described in plain language — into deterministic guardrails that are collected and enforced across pull requests, repositories and CI/CD pipelines. Guardrails run as code rather than as prompts, are applied uniformly to human-written and AI-generated code (with stated support for Claude Code, Cursor and Codex), and can be rolled out gradually from visibility to PR comments to blocking. The platform is centrally instrumented across repositories, ships a library the company describes as more than 200 built-in guardrails spanning incident response, internal standards, compliance and audit, migrations and operational readiness, and produces adherence dashboards and a continuous audit trail as a byproduct of enforcement. It works with GitHub, GitLab and any CI/CD system, and is presented as complementary to policy tools such as OPA and Rego by supplying structured SDLC data.
