Market position

Dylibso positions itself in the WebAssembly infrastructure and developer-tooling segment, targeting the production-readiness and plugin-system layer rather than a hosted application platform. It is discussed alongside Fermyon, which builds a cloud product for deploying and managing WebAssembly applications, as part of the same emerging Wasm ecosystem.

Rather than building a runtime or compiler, Dylibso concentrates on the operational tooling around WebAssembly — module inventory and inspection, policy-based validation via checkfiles, complexity and risk scoring, continuous observability, and reusable plugin frameworks — with an explicit design goal that the same tools work across browser, server, desktop and blockchain environments.

Technology

Products center on the WebAssembly binary format. Extism is a cross-language framework and plug-in system for building with Wasm; the Observe SDK provides continuous monitoring of WebAssembly code across multiple languages; XTP is a plugin system intended for production use. Modsurfer inspects Wasm binaries — imported and exported functions, namespaces, source language, binary size — computes cyclomatic complexity over WebAssembly instructions as a runtime-risk signal, exposes an HTTP API, and enforces declarative "checkfile" policies for host-ABI compatibility and least-privilege constraints.

Go-to-market

Distribution is developer-led and open source-oriented: free downloads of Modsurfer Desktop and CLI, public repositories under github.com/dylibso, published developer documentation, a support email address, a newsletter, an X/Twitter presence, and community engagement through the Extism Discord. Founders also participate in ecosystem podcasts and technical content.

Development teams and platform vendors adopting WebAssembly in production, including those running third-party or untrusted modules in their own infrastructure and those needing to inspect, audit or debug compiled Wasm binaries. Checkfile examples have been published for ecosystem companies and projects defining their own ABIs or platforms.

History

Dylibso built quietly for several months before formally launching publicly, announcing at the same time the beta of Modsurfer and a $6.6 million Seed round led by Felicis with participation from existing pre-seed backer boldstart ventures alongside Pebblebed and Crew Capital. Extism, its open source universal plug-in system, predated the launch announcement and had already attracted an outside contributor community. In March 2023, CEO Steve Manuel appeared on the On The Frontier podcast alongside Fermyon CEO Matt Butcher to discuss WebAssembly adoption. The company has since published developer documentation covering XTP, Extism and the Observe SDK.
