Alumni Q&A
- How did your company get started? (i.e., How did the founders meet? How did you come up with the idea? How did you decide to be a founder?)
- The idea grew out of Mostafa's 6 years of self-teaching Japanese via YouTube and his involvement in online language communities, where a post of his ranked among the most liked on r/LearnJapanese over a two-year span. He observed that existing apps like Duolingo were engaging but seen as ineffective, while immersion in native content was more effective but dull for beginners. After a year building an app that let users practice by talking to fictional characters in other languages, he found people didn't want to chat with AI daily, so he combined immersion with short-form scrolling.
Summarized from the founders' answers on their Y Combinator profile.
