CARV

Carv is a UK-based sports wearable company that turns ordinary ski boots into an instrumented coaching system. Its current product, Carv 2, consists of sensors that clip onto each boot strap and stream gyroscope and accelerometer data to a smartphone over low-energy Bluetooth. The app performs motion capture and technique analysis on-device, so the system works offline while skiing; runs sync to the cloud and leaderboards once connectivity returns. Earlier generations used in-boot inserts/footbeds, which Carv 2 replaced in 2024, and the company states its Motion AI software is backward compatible with the earlier insert hardware.

The product scores each run with a proprietary Ski:IQ measure, calculated from machine-learned weightings of ten technique metrics such as edge angle, early edging, centered balance, parallel skis, turn shape, progressive edge build, weight release and turn G-force, with weightings varying by skier level, slope pitch and terrain. Carv automatically tracks runs and lifts, detects snow surface (groomers, bumps, powder) and adapts coaching accordingly. Users can select among three modes: Track (data only), Learn (short audio tips between runs) and Train (real-time audio coaching games). The app also offers skill pathways, progress tracking over seasons, run/resort discovery and social features for finding friends on the mountain.

Carv targets skiers from intermediate through expert levels, with learning tracks ranging from moving from wedge to parallel to carving, through off-piste form and technique mastery. It also works with professional instructors and athletes, including a partnership with five-time world champion Ted Ligety for a "Train with an Olympian" coaching mode.
