Technology

A web- and desktop-based communication platform integrating SMS, email, video consultation (up to 50 participants), electronic forms and questionnaires, appointment booking and reminders, and patient record access with consent. It integrates with EMIS, SystmOne and Vision electronic medical records, and supports other systems such as EPIC, Cerner and Rio via the web product. Grokipedia states the platform runs on Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure with encryption in transit over HTTPS and at rest. AI capabilities include an ambient scribe for general practice consultations and announced smart triage summarisation, categorisation and an AI phone assistant.

Adoption is driven by direct self-service sign-up by healthcare organisations (a four-step online flow segmented by setting, region and EMR system), NHS procurement frameworks and assurance processes, and organisation-level deals with trusts and integrated care boards. Distribution has also come via integration with national infrastructure, including the NHS App, and via partnerships with individual trusts.

NHS general practices and GPs, acute hospital trusts, community trusts, community pharmacies, care homes and other healthcare organisations in England, plus integrated care systems, primary care networks and national bodies; patients are end users of the patient-facing tools.

History

After launching a prototype decision-support system in 2016-2017, Accurx piloted across 19 GP surgeries in Oxfordshire and Haringey in February 2017; feedback highlighted demand for SMS patient messaging, and the team ran more than 20 product iterations during a four-month collaboration with The Manor Surgery in Oxford from September 2017. A £8.8m Series A led by Atomico closed in February 2019. By February 2020 its Chain SMS product was live in half of English GP practices; the company launched video consultation in March 2020 in response to COVID-19 lockdowns and expanded to nearly all English GP practices by mid-2020. A £27.5m Series B led by Lakestar followed in September 2021. Between 2021 and 2022 Accurx integrated with NHS Digital to deliver forms and consultations through the NHS App, and in 2023 it partnered with George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust on outpatient transformation and elective recovery, part-funded by the Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care Board. In 2025 it launched AI ambient voice scribing and announced a partnership with Tandem Health.

Risks & controversies

Accurx's accessibility statement discloses that its patient-facing products are only partially compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA, citing contrast-ratio issues and partial non-compliance with assistive technologies for name, role and value. Its business is concentrated on a single national customer system, the NHS, and depends on public-sector procurement frameworks and NHS assurance.
